Art & design
I was born and raised in Suriname in the Marowijne District. At the end of 20th century, I left for the Netherlands. In 1986 I started studying psychology at State University of Utrecht. In 1992 I graduated at the Clinical and Health psychology department.
At a pretty young age I started painting peddles. My works are inspired by the Tembe art. Tembe is a term that covers the art of painting and wood carving. Geometrical symbols that express love, challenges and confirmations distinguish the Tembe style.
In some of my works I make use of the names of villages by means of appreciation, since Tembe is being practiced in nearly every village in the interior of Suriname.
I paint mainly on wooden panels while I apply three techniques:
- Painting
- Burning
- A Combination of painting and burning
My works consists of:
